Springtime

"As long as the earth remains, there will be springtime
and
harvest, cold and heat,
winter and summer, day and night."
Genesis 8:22 (NLT)

The trees were still barren from their winter dormancy. Leaves that had drifted down in the fall were scattered across the lawn. Some had embedded themselves between rocks and logs that encircled flower beds, patiently waiting for the spring season to return. Some days it was almost a dismal sight as we gazed out upon the desolateness of winter.
Before long, with a gentle breeze in the air, the days began to lose some of their chill. The temperatures slowly edged their way upward. And then on a cool morning in late February we looked out the window to see a dusting of color beginning to surface.
Shades of purple, yellow and gold shimmered among the brown leaves and grass. Spring crocuses were poking their brilliance through the left over winter leaves and grass. Some gorgeous yellow blossoms were arranged in clusters of three or four. One lone white and orchid bloom could be seen shining through all by itself. A leaf of green adorned this pretty floweret. Another portion of the lawn was completed sprinkled with stunning glistening purple crocuses.
How could this be? Just the week before, no signs of life could be seen in the places where these flowers were now exhibiting themselves so beautifully.
And then I remembered that God said as long as the earth remains their will be springtime and harvest, cold and heat, and winter and summer. Here I was experiencing that Biblical principle in full color from the colorful crocuses.
Sometimes through the ups and downs of daily living we find ourselves in the very depths of a barren winter season. For a while all things of color fade around us. Everything seems to take on the dull dark browns of lifelessness. We actually think joy and happiness have eluded us forever.
Yet, the same God who promised the return of an earthly spring will do the same for you and me. Cry out to Him from the depths of your heart as you claim His promises written in the Holy Word. He hears and answers our prayers. Maybe in a different way than you ever expected, but it will be good and right.
Winter will be over! Because of your faithfulness, spring in all its opulence shines down upon your life once more. While the purple, yellow, and gold of the gorgeous crocuses dot our lawns, joy, peace, and love shines forth in you.

This devotion is dedicated to my friends Jim and Bea Clouse
who inspired me with these photos.
